Tikkun Olam Award Winner Max Astrachan: Creating Anti-Discrimination Solutions

African-American Jew Max Astrachan is a pioneer of anti-discrimination solutions and strategies in education.

Founder of the SPIRIT (Student Problem Identification and Resolution of Issues Together) Council in his hometown of Harrisburg, PA, the Council addresses discrimination by organizing diversity programs, school-wide assemblies and trainings, revising policy, changing curriculum, and networking with other diversity groups. Its strategies have been implemented throughout high schools in the State of Pennsylvania, and the Council is looking to expand its services to younger students, developing diversity programs and training programs for middle and elementary school students as well.

We caught up with Max to talk about his transition from high school to college (including where he wants to settle down), his plans for the future, and his blessings for America — as well as about his pro-diversity rabbi and temple, which still serve as a source of inspiration.
