An Open Letter to Ami Magazine

I remember when you were first published. You were so bold, back then. You dealt with the issues of the day in a straightforward manner, not like Binah or Mispacha. You were current, with it. You were considered modernishe. Maybe to some, you still are.

To me, I feel let down and betrayed because you chose to keep quiet.

When it was time for #nosafespaceforjewhate and #nomoreantisemitism you chose silence. You didn’t just choose silence, you deleted every one of your past tweets, as if you were never there. Why?

Why would you allow yourself to be silenced? It wasn’t as if it happened suddenly – every Jew who uses social media knew that there was going to be a 48 hour ‘black-out’ supposedly because an anti-Semite named Wiley was allowed to rant for that long. So to counter this, someone came up with the idea for Jews to be silent on social media for that long.

It’s the Nine Days, and I don’t want to start any fights, but I have to say I seriously believe with my whole heart and soul this was a misstep on your part. Now more than ever,Jews all over the world have an obligation to speak up, to not allow those who despise us to succeed in silencing us.

They did, once. About 80 years ago, the enemy silenced six million of us. The world was silent, then.

But they’re not, now. So why are you? We have those who hate us, yes, but we have more support, more presence, more of a platform now than in any other time in history. And you, Ami Magazine, have chosen to be silent. You erased your history from Twitter. Even if you wanted to stay off social media, I guess you do you. But to delete all your past tweets?

You played straight into the enemy’s hands. Mazel tov.

Just one last question: how do you feel now, knowing that so few Jews are staying silent? How do you feel knowing you chose the safe way, the easy way?

We come into this word screaming, and if we are fortunate, we leave the world with the Shema on our lips. Jews aren’t supposed to pass through this world unnoticed.

No one but G-d Above can silence me. Too bad I can’t say the same for you.
