American Jews Politically Split Ahead of Election

The American Jewish Committee has released results of a new poll today, showing American Jews overwhelmingly voting for Joe Biden, with 75% of Jewish voters poised to vote for the Democrat:

Jewish voters are set to vote 75% to 22% for Joe Biden, according to a poll by the American Jewish Committee.

The poll released Monday shows the Democratic nominee expanding his support among Jewish voters from a 67-30 split in a poll last month and it includes other signs that President Donald Trump is faring poorly among Jewish voters.

This split stands in contrast to the Orthodox Jewish community – who overwhelmingly support Trump 74-26 – and Israeli Jews, 63% of whom support the President. This number comes on the heels of the Orthodox publication Ami Magazine’s poll, showing 83% Orthodox support for Trump.

Only 5% of American Jews place foreign policy (presumably, Israel) as their highest priority; race relations ranked fourth in the survey, with 12% of Jews placing it at the top of their list. Most common top priority issues were COVID-19 and health care.

The Orthodox community, haredi Orthodox in particular, has been particularly vocal about its Trump support. Trump flags fly in haredi enclaves where they would be eschewed in more liberal Jewish suburbs. And this fact has not gone unnoticed by the President, who, for example, tweets in solidarity with the Orthodox Jewish communities of Brooklyn speaking out against coronavirus restrictions.
